The ankle joint

The ankle joint is the main joint of the foot, comprised of two joint sections, the upper ankle joint (Articulatio talocruralis) and lower ankle joint (Articulatio talotarsalis). The functional joint complex brings together the lower leg and foot. On a functional level, the ankle joint is a combination of a hinge joint with a ball-and-socket joint. A complex arrangement of ligaments and cartilage ensure smooth joint function. Disruptions to the interplay of the individual components can trigger ankle pain. This may be caused by excessive or undue strain, illness and injuries.

Applications and indications for ankle supports

Our ankle joints are subjected to a great deal of strain in everyday routines – when walking, climbing stairs, jumping or during exercise. Smooth movement is only possible with a stable and pain-free ankle. For ankle problems, pain or heavy strain, an orthopaedic ankle support can provide valuable assistance. Your physician can decide whether a support is beneficial. In general, the rule is that medical ankle supports are suitable for everyday use by anyone with damaged ankle joints who spends a lot of time on their feet. This protects the joint against excessive strain.

How ankle supports work

The functional compression knit fabric surrounds the affected, injured, operated or strained ankle and exerts radial compression. This optimises proprioception, reduces muscular imbalances and stabilises the ankle joint.

Extra options and models

Our ankle supports with integrated silicone pads deliver uniform pressure distribution, more grip for the ankle and a massage effect. Individually adjustable strap elements provide optimal stabilisation for the joint. Optional stretch zones make donning and doffing easier and increase wearing comfort. Juzo Xtra supports for the ankle adapt flexibly to movement patterns. The stabilisation elements and breathable knitted fabrics are based on the human anatomy and natural movement sequences. Special zones and reduced pressure at the borders ensure ideal wearing comfort during movement.
