The elbow

The elbow, also referred to as cubitus, combines the upper arm bone (humerus) with the two forearm bones (ulna and radius). The elbow is a joint composed of three joint sections. Apart from the humeroulnar joint (articulatio humeroulnaris) and humeroradial joint (articulatio humeroradialis), which enable the arm to bend and stretch, there is also the distal radioulnar joint (articulatio radioulnaris distalis) which allows the forearm to rotate.

Application and indications of elbow supports

The elbow is a relatively complex joint that enables the arm to bend and stretch as well as 90 degree rotation of the forearm inwards and outwards. Particularly during repeated movements, the elbow is subjected to heavy strain. The most frequent elbow symptoms include inflammation of the tendon insertion such as tennis elbow, also known as tennis arm, and golfer’s elbow. These conditions occur not only in people who play tennis or golf, but also for types of work and sports that require lots of elbow rotation. For chronic excess strain conditions or pain due to heavy loads, an orthopaedic elbow support can provide relief and reduce pain. The best course of action is to consult your physician for professional examination and advice.

Potential indications for the elbow

  • Tendon insertion inflammations such as tennis arm (tennis elbow) or golfer’s elbow
  • chronic, post-traumatic or postoperative irritation
  • contusions
  • sprains
  • joint effusions
  • dislocations

How elbow supports work

A support for the elbow joint can offer valuable assistance for pain in the elbow. It helps to keep the joint in a stable position and relieves the joint and tendon insertions through gentle restriction of movement. At the same time, the elbow support’s compression effect promotes the circulation and counteracts post-traumatic and postoperative swelling as well as oedemas. Because the support provides effective relief and stabilisation without completely immobilising the elbow, it is ideally suited for returning to activity after an illness or injury.

The elbow support with extra functionality

Juzo Xtra supports are technically sophisticated medical aids that adapt flexibly to movement patterns. The elbow support has silicone pads with friction nubs that exert a massage-like effect, while the area of the tendon insertions has a cut-out opening to provide relief. Breathable knitted fabrics improve the moisture wicking properties, thereby enhancing temperature regulation. The special comfort zone at the crook of the elbow and reduced pressure at the borders ensure ideal wearing comfort during movement.
